Meetings & Events InfoAbout Fairbanks
The largest city in Alaska’s Interior region and the third largest in the state, Fairbanks is a modern city surrounded by expansive wilderness. Its location at the heart of the state, the character of its residents and the discovery of gold have earned Fairbanks the nickname of the “Golden Heart City.” Located 188 miles south of the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is known for chilly winters lit by the dancing lights of the aurora borealis and long summer days that offer up to 21 hours of sunlight.
The city is a two-hour drive from the 6 million acres of Denali National Park and Preserve, home to the majestic Denali, North America’s tallest peak. Book a tour through the seasonal tour desk at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel and venture into the park, where wildlife such as moose, wolves, caribou, Dall sheep and bears roam the tundra surrounding the breathtaking, snow-capped peak.
If you have traveled to Alaska searching for the brilliant northern lights, Fairbanks is the ultimate destination. Prime viewing season is September through March. The Geophysical Institute located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks provides a daily forecast for when the lights will be active.
Fairbanks is also home to one of the state’s finest museums, the University of Alaska Museum of the North. The museum is a popular visitor attraction and only research and teaching museum in Alaska. Browse through its 1.4 million artifacts and specimens and learn about the biological diversity and cultural traditions of the North. Exhibit highlights include the state’s largest public display of gold, a 36,000-year-old mummified steppe bison and a 2,000-year spectrum of Alaska art, from ancient ivory carvings to contemporary paintings and sculpture.
While you are in Fairbanks, choose to visit the Georgeson Botanical Garden, at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, take a hike on one of Fairbanks’ many trails or tour Eielson Air Force Base. No matter your preference, Fairbanks offers a range of exciting activities for any traveler.
