Just because school is out for the summer it doesn’t mean kids (or adults) should take a break from learning. Take the classroom outdoors with opportunities all around Anchorage to learn and explore.
Campbell Creek Science Center
With nature-based learning activities, the Campbell Creek Science Center is a great place for kids to learn about nature and wildlife in and around the city. Surrounded by acres of forests, the center offers hands-on learning experiences to further encourage curiosity while exploring nature. Upcoming events include Healthy Fish, Healthy Forests; Nature Journaling; Forest Ecology Hike and more!
Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Located a short drive south of Anchorage along the Turnagain Arm, visitors and kids can explore the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (pictured above) to learn more about the wildlife of Alaska. During the visit, you can walk or drive around to the various enclosures to see bison, wolves, lynx and more. To get up close with the animals, there are also opportunities to feed a moose or porcupine!
The Alaska Zoo
Grab a bag of popcorn at the concession stand and embark on an adventure through the zoo. The Alaska Zoo has an easy-to-follow layout and many residents to meet. Explore on your own or check out one of the tours or experiences offered.
Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
Grab the kids and some water for a walk along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. With amazing views of the Cook Inlet, the 11-mile trail is popular for biking, running, roller blading and leisure strolls. With wildlife on the ground and bald eagles flying above, even just a short walk on the trail is memorable! Read signs posted along the trail to learn more about the area. You can also learn more about our solar system on a light speed planet walk, a scale model of our solar system designed at a pace that mimics the speed of light (an eight-minute walk will take you from the Sun station to the Earth station, the same amount of time it takes a light beam to travel from the Sun to us).
