Get in the spirit of giving this holiday season! Check out these local Alaska organizations where you can volunteer or give back this year.
Bean’s Café exists to fight hunger in all ages, and there are plenty of opportunities for people to give back to the community and volunteer during the holidays. Year-round, Bean’s Café is in need of individuals willing to help prep and serve meals, volunteer, contribute The Children’s Lunchbox program, assist in its administrative offices and help coordinate special events. Those interested in donating their time during Thanksgiving can sign up to run food stations and help serve the Anchorage community.
Food Bank of Alaska is committed to provide a hunger-free environment in the state. This organization offers numerous ways to give back whether you are interested in donating your time or money this holiday season. You can help to fill the plates of families, children, seniors and veterans in the state. Throughout November, the Food Bank of Alaska will be actively seeking volunteers to participate in its Thanksgiving Blessing, which provides groceries for families who may be going without this holiday season.
United Way of Anchorage is working to create a thriving community in economically challenging times. Specifically, improving finances in families, preparing children for education, connecting Alaskans to affordable health care, and contributing to solve homelessness in the state. Volunteering for the United Way of Anchorage could consist of mentoring children, preparing taxes or encouraging families to instill a passion for education for their children.
Covenant House Alaska works to provide a safe space for at-risk Alaska youth. Volunteer opportunities consist of kitchen helpers, clothing room volunteers, art workshops and beyond. Each November, Covenant House reaches out for volunteers to help with its annual Candlelight Vigil to bring awareness to youth homelessness in the state.
Giving back to your community is the best gift you can give this holiday season!
